Cataract surgery and specialized care campaign in Taounate

Campagne de chirurgie de la cataracte et de soins spécialisés à Taounate Campagne de chirurgie de la cataracte et de soins spécialisés à Taounate

As part of its medical-humanitarian activities during the month of Ramadan, the Foundation is organizing a medical-surgical campaign to benefit the populations of the Taounate province, from March 20 to 22, 2025.

This initiative addresses a dual need: to provide cataract surgery care and facilitate access to specialized healthcare for the populations of Bouhouda and ten nearby communes in the Taounate area.

Through this solidarity project, the Foundation will cover 120 surgical interventions while offering a target population of 4,500 people various medical services. General medicine consultations, dental care, and specialized consultations in ENT, ophthalmology, pediatrics, cardiology, gastroenterology, gynecology, and rheumatology are among the services available. Special attention will be given to the screening and provision of aid for people with physical disabilities.

To ensure optimal care, significant human, technical, and logistical resources have been deployed. A team of 120 people is involved in this medical campaign, including doctors, managers, social workers and technicians from the Foundation, as well as 32 specialists, including 8 ophthalmologic surgeons, 10 general practitioners, and 20 nurses supported by volunteers assisting the populations.

Two sites will host this campaign: Bouhouda, located 17 km from Taounate, and the provincial hospital of Taounate. The main site, set up as a platform in Bouhouda, will centralize specialized services, cataract screening, and the provision of aid for people with physical disabilities. It includes reception areas, registration and vital signs taking, an aid workshop, and specialized medical stations, including one dedicated to telemedicine. These spaces are complemented by 11 mobile medical units for consultations in various specialties (ophthalmology, gynecology, dental care), biological analysis, ultrasound examinations, and medication distribution.

The surgical interventions will take place at the provincial hospital of Taounate, where two operating theaters, each with four stations, have been set up for the occasion.

This operation is being carried out with the support of local authorities, the regional directorate of Health and Social Protection of Fès – Meknès, the provincial delegation of Health and Social Protection of Taounate, the University Hospital Center – CHU of Fès, the provincial hospital of Taounate, the Friends of the Visually Impaired Association of Fès, the Provincial Association for the Support of Patients with Renal Insufficiency in Taounate, the Inititiaves Santé Aide au Développement Association and the Dentist’s Unions of Fès and Region.

From January to March 2025, the Foundation conducted three similar campaigns in Zagora, Tan Tan, and Berkane-Oujda, which helped 7,659 people, including 5,030 women, and carried out 249 surgical interventions (cataract surgery, general and pediatric surgery, circumcisions), as well as 14,874 medical and specialized care procedures.

This new campaign is part of the Foundation community medical campaigns program, bringing healthcare closer to rural populations, relieving them, and contributing to improving their well-being.
