On the instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Foundation deployed a major medical and humanitarian aid campaign following the unprecedented snowfall which seriously affected the provinces of Ouarzazate, Zagora and Taroudant.
The operation made it possible to reach populations in the mountainous and remote douars, providing them with emergency humanitarian aid including food and blankets, as well as social support and medical care.
Humanitarian aid began being delivered by air on Saturday, February 18. Planes from the Royal Armed Forces were mobilized through an air bridge that was set up between Casablanca airport and the airports of Ouarzazate and Zagora. Helicopters from the Royal Gendarmerie and the Royal Armed Forces were also deployed to reach isolated areas in particular for the purposes of emergency medical evacuations and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Significant human, technical and logistical systems were put in place for this campaign. Dedicated teams of social workers and doctors from the Foundation, working with the relevant departments and local authorities were deployed in the field to meet the needs of the affected areas.
24,000 families (Taroudant: 10,000 - Ouarzazate: 9,000 - Zagora: 5,000) from 651 douars and from the three provinces benefited from humanitarian aid. In addition to 13 air operations that were carried out to deliver aid to douars that were difficult to access, there were 3 cases of pregnant women and 2 cases of medical emergency that were evacuated to Ouarzazate provincial hospital.
At the same time, two multidisciplinary medical caravans (general consultation and specialized care) were organized in the province of Ouarzazate, in the douars of Tidili and Iminoulaoune. Two areas that have experienced snowfall never seen previously. Organized with the help of the Regional Delegation of Health, the caravans delivered medical care to 4,182 people including 1,544 women.
